This website features a huge collection of the popular traditional and folkloristic Maltese songs, mostly being released between the 60s and early 80s. The theme of these songs are mostly based on love, patriotic, nostalgic or folkloristic themes, with few having a religious or huoristic themes. Sense of humour is often present in many folkloristic songs. Among the most popular titles one can find songs like "Xemx", "Inti djamant", "L-ahhar bidwi f'Wied il-Ghasel", "Lil Ommi", "Mur hallini u itlaq l' hemm", "il-Festa", "Niftakar fik", "Qalb ta' Kampanjol", "Taxi Mary", "l-Emigrant", "Viva Malta", "Sahha Malta", 'Santwarju tal-Maddonna" and "L-ewwel tfajla li habbejt".
Also included are dozens of folk songs which are locally called as 'Ghana'. Ghana was sung in the past by maltese peasants and poor people for many years as a way of entertainment. Three of the most famous "ghannejja" (ghana folk singers) have passed away these couple of years and their joyful personality and songs will remain in our heart for ever. These areFredu Abela (also known as il-Bamboccu) who sadly passed away in 2004 Frans Baldacchino, known as 'il-Budaj' and Mikiel Abela, known as 'il-Bambinu'.
A famous rock singer who is much loved by the Maltese both for his friendly character and inspiring charisma as well popular with his great music, mostly released in the late 70s is Freddie Portelli. Other kings of Maltese Music are the Greenfields, New Cuorey, David Azzopardi, The Tramps, Renato, Mary Spiteri, and my favourite - Mary Rose Mallia. This website brings back these old songs from the ashes and is ideal for emmigrants which for them is almost impossible to aquire such past songs.
Included are also the lyrics from some of the listed songs - a great idea for Karaoke lovers! Lyrics are displayed on an own and different window. Songs (and lyrics) are updated regularly throughout the year. Anyone who wants to contribute lyrics or songs email us - we would be very glad to enlarge and enhance this page - check the request song list for some songs we require. Note that who contributes 5 valid MP3 songs that are not found on the website, will get a free anual membership.
This musical treasure (> 350 titles), can be all yours for an annual subscription that is equivalent to less than 0.08c Euro per song. A demo tour page is also available to check and evaluate things out. The entire compilation is only available for download / live listening in the member's area and below we listed a sample of 100 songs from the list to have an idea of what type of songs this website can give you.
